Bahrain must now end systemic use of torture

Following the publication of the unprecedented report by the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry which found that security forces in the Kingdom used torture, the IRCT is calling on the Bahraini government to bring an end to the systemic use of torture.

The report, commissioned by King Hamad of Bahrain, and released yesterday found that, in suppressing protests this spring, security forces: “followed a systematic practice of physical and psychological mistreatment, which in many cases amounted to torture, with respect to a large number of detainees in their custody.”
The Bahraini government has said it will create a committee to study the commission’s findings and enact its recommendations.
“While it is groundbreaking that such a report was commissioned, the government of Bahrain must pay more than lip service to its findings,” said Brita Sydhoff, IRCT Secretary-General.
“Not only must reforms to the Bahraini law be made, as suggested by the King, but perpetrators of torture must be held to account. Moreover, provision for the rehabilitation of survivors of torture must be made, as stipulated in the UN Convention Against Torture,” added Sydhoff.
